A Short Quiz
I want to ask you a few questions:
* Do you consistently put your bank statements at the bottom of the mail pile? (Or ignore that monthly email from your bank or credit card company?)
* Are you always moving small amounts of money from one account to the other to stave off a crisis?
* Do you cringe when someone asks how things are going in your business?
* Do you find it difficult to take money out of your business?
* Are you not exactly sure what to be doing (or when)?
* Do you pass off all your money management to someone else?
If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these, you’re probably ostriching around your money a little bit.
So how do you know if you’re hiding from your finances?
Maybe your answer is “I know I’m hiding my head in the sand because I really don’t want to deal with it.”
Or maybe you think everything’s going well and you’re feeling on top of it all. If money is coming in and the bills are getting paid, isn’t that enough?
Short answer: that’s a great place to start.
However, to be really successful in small business, it’s not enough in the long run. Especially if you want to grow and really maximize your money potential. We really need to drill down on why we’re ignoring, cringing, hiding, or otherwise freaking out about our money, so we can make significant change happen.
Everyone freaks out about money.
Don’t kid yourself. There’s really nothing special about you and your situation with this. (You of course are special. Just not your beliefs around finances.) We all have money issues.
And while we’re all in business to make money, we often feel handling it is hard, or boring, or just not something we’re particularly good at. Maybe you feel it’s not worth your time. Basically, we want money, but we don’t want to deal with it, either. It’s a double-edged sword of the highest degree.
When you start learning better money management or begin working with someone to help you get your financial systems in order, you’ll find yourself feeling so much more confident and comfortable about what’s going in your business. And not just around your finances! It trickles down through all pieces of your business puzzle, because you can see how everything ties together more clearly.
And, ironically, getting a handle on your finances can actually free up a lot of your time. It eliminates all the negative “swirl” taking up brain space, because you know exactly where you stand. You don’t spend a lot of time spinning because you know exactly what to be doing and when.
Your potential and your growth becomes exponential when you cut out the negative, crappy beliefs you have about your money and/or your money management.
So if you answered “yes” to any of the questions listed above, or felt a pit in your stomach reading them, then there’s a good chance you have some work to do around your finances.
I don’t care if you read “Finance For Dummies” or take your bookkeeper or accountant out to lunch once a month and ask them a hundred questions. Find a way to start learning about financial management for small businesses. It will change your life, I promise.
